Dr. Cherri Penton Ph.D., MP
Medical Psychologist Advanced Practice
Dr. Penton specializes in the mental and behavioral health of children. As a Medical Psychologist (Prescribing Psychologist), she combines psychological therapy with medication management, when needed, in the assessment and treatment of children with emotional, behavioral or academic concerns.
As part of Dr. Penton’s treatment strategies, she consults with parents or other care-givers, teachers and her patients’ Primary Care Physician or Pediatrician regarding treatment plans. She frequently uses genetic testing to guide treatment choices and define which medication can best be used for treatment.
Dr. Penton has both Master’s and Doctoral degrees in Psychology from Louisiana State University. She completed a Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Infant and Toddler Mental Health at Tulane University Medical School in the Department of Psychiatry and Neurology. She also earned her Post-Doctoral Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychopharmacology from Alliant University.
Prior to joining BRCCC, Dr. Penton practiced Psychology and Medical Psychology as an independent practitioner at the McMains Childrens Developmental Center and was a consultant to the Pupil Appraisal Team in East Feliciana Parish School System.
Dr. Penton is accepting new patients, age 4+. Although specializing in children, in many cases, treatment of the child-patient may encompass didactic sessions with both the child and his or her “important adults,” and sometimes other family members involved in the child’s life. She also sees adults and adolescents.
Dr. Penton accepts commercial Aetna, BCBS, Cigna, Humana, United Health Care insurance and self-pay patients (self-pay initial diagnostic evaluation $250.00; on-going treatment between $100.00 – $250.00, depending on length of session and whether medication management is needed).
Dr. Penton and her husband are members of Jefferson Baptist Church where their son, Trey Penton, is General Manager of WBRJ Christian Radio Station broadcasting locally and streaming globally.
